Summary

Her life for freedom。 Her blood for love。 Her soul for vengeance。

Ripped from a forgotten homeland as a child, Tisaanah learned how to survive with nothing but a sharp wit and a touch of magic。 But the night she tries to buy her freedom, she barely escapes with her life。

Desperate to save the best friend she left behind, Tisaanah journeys to the Orders, the most powerful organization of magic Wielders in the world。 But to join their ranks, she must complete an apprenticeship with Maxantarius Farlione, a handsome and reclusive fire wielder who despises the Orders。

The Orders’ intentions are cryptic, and Tisaanah must prove herself under the threat of looming war。 Even more dangerous are her growing feelings for Maxantarius。 The bloody past he wants to forget may be the key to her future… or the downfall of them both。

But Tisaanah will stop at nothing to save those she abandoned。 Even if it means gambling in the Orders’ deadly games。 Even if it means sacrificing her heart。

Even if it means wielding death itself。

Many people do terrible things。 But we can either eat our anger and make it fuel us or we can let it eat us alive。Hmmm。 It was okay? Not sure how I feel about this。 I do ship the couple and the rest was just okay? Even then it was a very slow burn and I’m not going crazy over this couple。 A lot of people compared this to SJM series (TOG and ACOTAR) but this really doesn’t hold a candle to those two series… it was hard to get into and not really action packed until like 80% of the book? If it wasn’t for the audiobook, I would’ve probably DNF’ed。 -fantasy -heroine was okay (just sheer determination - not really as badass as people compare her to Celaena) -broody/grumpy hero-some banter between hero and heroine was funny-i thought they will be more history about the heroine’s heritage but not really-also, the heroine thought she is SO important throughout the whole book while she is just a slave with nothing special and it was annoying -audiobook: female narrator was just okay。 She made the heroine sounds so fkin annoying and like a baby, whining voices-i wont be continuing on this series** 。。。more

SO GOOD! Very TOG-like, but a quicker pace。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 To me three stars = it was alright。 Which it was。 I liked Max, but never really felt that compelled by the other characters or the world building in general。 I didn’t understand Tis’ (I will abbreviate since autocorrect is a bitch when writing her complete name) motives completely。 It didn’t feel as if she felt like being a slave was the worst existence she could imagine in the beginning。 And then she wanted to free all slaves once she got away。 I just didn’t really get her motives, and that mad To me three stars = it was alright。 Which it was。 I liked Max, but never really felt that compelled by the other characters or the world building in general。 I didn’t understand Tis’ (I will abbreviate since autocorrect is a bitch when writing her complete name) motives completely。 It didn’t feel as if she felt like being a slave was the worst existence she could imagine in the beginning。 And then she wanted to free all slaves once she got away。 I just didn’t really get her motives, and that made it hard to connect to and sympathise with her。 This also made it hard for me to understand why she would agree to becoming a weapon and being used again without basically any questions。 I just don’t like when characters are being stupid and don’t utilise their brain cells, and this was such a case for me。 The final “battle” was confusing。 When I read it I didn’t understand if the being was gone, if they merged or what it was that actually happened。 It also felt a bit anti-climatic。 I didn’t really enjoy the “mind-battle” parts of the book in general。 It’s just not something I find interesting。 The last part of the book felt a bit rushed。 Like it pushed too fast to get the whole storyline with the weapon and some kind of coup going。 Also, how was the Order planning on doing this without a blood pact to start with? It doesn’t really seem like something you would wanna put in a person and then let them skip around and do what they want with。 My favourite parts were the slow parts when Max and Tis were in the cottage。 I especially felt it showed more of who Max was, and the slow-burn of it was nicely written with their jokes and conversations。 “Perfectly functional” made me laugh。 All in all it was alright。 I didn’t sigh with frustration as I definitely have done with other books, but I didn’t become immersed in the world either。 。。。more

I've been stuck in an awful reading slump for the past month and this book got me out of it, so I have to give it points for that。Initially, I started reading it, because someone said it gave off TOG vibes, and if you know me, this is my favorite series。 I can't say if I fully agree with this comparison, but I can see where this person came from。The world building was okay, it could have been better, but I'm not too mad about it, it's only the first book after all。I liked the characters tho, esp I've been stuck in an awful reading slump for the past month and this book got me out of it, so I have to give it points for that。Initially, I started reading it, because someone said it gave off TOG vibes, and if you know me, this is my favorite series。 I can't say if I fully agree with this comparison, but I can see where this person came from。The world building was okay, it could have been better, but I'm not too mad about it, it's only the first book after all。I liked the characters tho, especially how a certain relationship grew and took shape, this was nicely done。My only problem was that the whole time I felt like something was just off, I don't know if it was the writing, the backstories, the kinda fast-paced storyline or if it was just me, but I couldn't help it, something was weird。 I really hope that in the second book this has been corrected。Overall, I really enjoyed it。 It was an easy read, but I hope that the storyline gets more complicated and engaging。P。s。 I'm not yet sure about my rating, but for now let's say that it's this high。 。。。more

Loved the world building, the main character, and her relationship with the love interest - the main plot/villain/goal felt confused and the stakes felt low。 The book took a turn for the worse about 65% of the way in when the plot was supposed to ramp up and feel exciting - it didn’t。 The best part of the book are the characters who are compelling - plot could have been much more interesting。

Emma Worley

Amazing。 Loved the story and world。 This book broke my heart at times and made me fall in love with the characters。 Can’t wait to read the rest of the series。

maiaaaa

tbh some moments made me cringe but ppl here are saying it gets better soooooreview to come

This book felt like swimming through molasses。 I finished it simply because I paid for it and was determined to complete it。 I just finished and couldn’t tell you much about it。 The story was unremarkable, writing was boring。 I’m so glad to be done with it。

Good。 Nice world building and initial development of the main character。 Cool, original magic system with in interesting twist。 Got me reasonably invested in the characters, equal parts development writing and action with a nice set up for the sequel as well as a good wrap up/ending for book 1。 Not emotionally attached enough to the characters yet (despite their tragedies) for the full 5 stars。 Maybe in book 2??

Amie Jakubiec

Very good story with great characters strong female lead who actually has her own mind

4/5a little bit iconic, I fearthis definitely has acotar vibez with the outrageously powerful fmc and mmc BUT I think the similarities mostly end there。 THANKFULLY。 as for the romance, I love that this had a slow burn friends to lovers vibe instead of being overly sexual and intense from the moment they meet。 I'm not usually a friends to lovers girlie but this was done so well, I love them :')anyway I'm itching to read the next one。 the audiobook is bad for this one though。 I mostly read the ebo 4/5a little bit iconic, I fearthis definitely has acotar vibez with the outrageously powerful fmc and mmc BUT I think the similarities mostly end there。 THANKFULLY。 as for the romance, I love that this had a slow burn friends to lovers vibe instead of being overly sexual and intense from the moment they meet。 I'm not usually a friends to lovers girlie but this was done so well, I love them :')anyway I'm itching to read the next one。 the audiobook is bad for this one though。 I mostly read the ebook bc the voice for Max was almost as bad as Kaz Brekker's voice in Wylan's POV in the CK audiobook 😭 iykykanyway I rly liked this and I will be reading the next one soooo expeditiously 。。。more

Really sad because I have to DNF this。 I just can’t get over how convoluted and chunky the writing is。 It has a lot of potential。 But half the time I couldn’t figure out where to even place the characters。 In one scene we’re told the characters are in a pond and go back to where they can touch the earth, time passes and they interact and then we’re told they go back to shore。 Like weren’t they already at the shore?? Where else would they have the earth beneath their feet?! This happened consiste Really sad because I have to DNF this。 I just can’t get over how convoluted and chunky the writing is。 It has a lot of potential。 But half the time I couldn’t figure out where to even place the characters。 In one scene we’re told the characters are in a pond and go back to where they can touch the earth, time passes and they interact and then we’re told they go back to shore。 Like weren’t they already at the shore?? Where else would they have the earth beneath their feet?! This happened consistently。 Contradictions and confusing dialogue where half the time I had no idea what someone was even referring to when they were speaking。 Like they were telling an inside joke I was supposed to get。 Too heavy on the metaphors。 Instead of “the anger in his eyes” it was the “frenzied fury in his eyes”。 But this was constant, every single line。 I had to DNF because I was sick of rereading paragraphs just trying to figure out the simple emotion the author was trying to convey。 It was exhausting。 I also felt that as much as I enjoyed the lighthearted tone during certain moments, it seemed that all of the painful traumatic things that happened were just skipped over and not given the proper time to process and convey the weight of what was happening。 Like the characters aren’t really all that messed up at all even though they really should be with what they’ve gone through。 Compare it to A Court of Thorns and Roses。 We’re introduced to a starving, hopeless Feyre and you can practically feel her desperation and despair。 Or Jude Duarte in FOTA whose insecurity and defiance breathe life into the tone of the whole story。 Tisaanah simply doesn’t feel to me like someone who has been desperate and abused。 🫤Okay rant over… but expressing my true feelings was liberating。 It really wasn’t the worst book and had tons of potential! I might give this author’s new series a try to see if the writing is more to my liking。 😮‍💨 I’ll also list some pros because there really were some:- well paced and thought out world-building - vivid characters, both main and side- relatable moments 。。。more

I officially have a new fantasy series/author to obsess over。 Broadbent’s writing is captivating, descriptive, and tbh reminds me a little of my own which was great because it spoke to my brain in a way I can’t describe 😂I just have two minor bones to pick that resulted in this being a 4 star read and not a 5 star:(1) the magic system。 I don’t fully understand it。 What, exactly, are Valtain and why do they look different? How is one born (or made?? idk)?? How is one born (or made?? idk)?? How did a Fractured like Tisaanah happen and how common even are they? See, questions。 Maybe they’ll get answered in the following books, but these feel like world-building basics that should be addressed in a book 1。(2) world-building in general。 Magic system aside, I still don’t have a full grasp on the world。 I loved the characters SO MUCH, but I feel like we got so much internal character development and just not enough exposition。 I know, I know, I’m basically complaining about a lack of an info dump。 But sometimes you need a good info dumping, and that’s what I was missing here。But, alas, I’m being nit-picky here。 I’m excited as heck to read the next 2 books in the series。 Max is the grumpy cinnamon roll of my dreams and I would jump off a cliff for him。That is all 🫡 。。。more

DNF at 49% (about 259 pages) This book is putting me in a bit of a reading slump。

I first read The Serpent and the Wings of Night and loved it so much that I just had to try this book。 I’m obsessed。 Tisaanah and Max are amazing。 I love the character development throughout this book。 Sometimes the magic got a little confusing, like I still am not 100% what can and cannot happen with magic in this world。 But that’s hardly enough for me to drop a star。 FIVE STARS。

I really love Max, specially his famous sentence “ I am not made for this”。 I love the bickering between him and Tisaanah。 The slow burn in this book is real。 I actually screamed in multiple occasions because both of them were infuriating in that aspect。 My heart broke for both of them。 What Max was forced to do is absolutely horrific。 I want to cuddle him。 Tisaanah is a bad ass。 She’s so fierce and nothing can stop her to help the one she loves。 The only negative thing I have to stay about this I really love Max, specially his famous sentence “ I am not made for this”。 I love the bickering between him and Tisaanah。 The slow burn in this book is real。 I actually screamed in multiple occasions because both of them were infuriating in that aspect。 My heart broke for both of them。 What Max was forced to do is absolutely horrific。 I want to cuddle him。 Tisaanah is a bad ass。 She’s so fierce and nothing can stop her to help the one she loves。 The only negative thing I have to stay about this book was some part were a bit fast paced but other than that this book was amazing。 I’m excited to read the rest of the books。 。。。more

This book is nothing less than spectacular。It starts with a simple story of revenge, and it's just good。 The more you read though, the better it gets。 The story gets more and more intense, just as the writing gets better and better。 It's a crescendo of feelings and pain that just ends in a blaze of glory。Amazing work。 This book is nothing less than spectacular。It starts with a simple story of revenge, and it's just good。 The more you read though, the better it gets。 The story gets more and more intense, just as the writing gets better and better。 It's a crescendo of feelings and pain that just ends in a blaze of glory。Amazing work。 。。。more

This was sooo amazingly good。 Everything was just so amazingly amazing。 The relationship between Max and Tisaanah developed in such a beautiful way。 I don't really know how to describe it but this was amazing, the dynamics between the characters their backstories, the world and the magic system。 It had me crying a couple times。 I'm so excited to read the next one This was sooo amazingly good。 Everything was just so amazingly amazing。 The relationship between Max and Tisaanah developed in such a beautiful way。 I don't really know how to describe it but this was amazing, the dynamics between the characters their backstories, the world and the magic system。 It had me crying a couple times。 I'm so excited to read the next one 。。。more

When I was told that this was great, they weren't giving this book it's true credit! It had been on my TBR for way too long, but thanks to BookTok I was reminded of it。I'd say this is easily a sister story to Throne of Glass, I can see there may have been inspiration but it's also very much its own。 If you're an SJM fan, give this a go。Such an easy read。I love that there was a slight language barrier near the beginning, a very true to life touch。 When I was told that this was great, they weren't giving this book it's true credit!
